What is an AI agentic harness? I built one that ships this blog
An AI agentic harness is the boring, load-bearing part everyone skips: the scaffolding that lets an autonomous agent take real actions safely, on a schedule, with no human watching. Not the model — the harness around it. This blog is written, reviewed, and shipped by one, so here is what actually goes into an AI agentic harness that runs in production.
Strip away the hype and an agentic harness is four things: a trigger (a cron or an event that wakes the agent), a bounded set of actions it is allowed to take (a task, a gate, a deploy), a safety layer that can say no (a security review, a test suite, a kill switch), and a memory of what it did. Miss any one and you do not have a harness. You have a script that occasionally sets things on fire.
The model is the easy part now; you can rent frontier reasoning by the token. The hard part of an AI agentic harness is everything around it: what is the agent allowed to touch, how do you stop it shipping something broken, what happens when it fails at 3am. That is where autonomy becomes either useful or a liability.
Mine runs lights-out on a small VPS. A tiered router sends easy calls to a local 35B model on a 2-node GPU cluster and hard ones to a frontier model. Every change the harness makes passes the same gate a human change would: a static-analysis pass, a secret scan, an AI security review of the diff, and a 100 percent coverage check on the pure logic. It watches its own health, repairs its own failed builds, and proposes its own next tasks. When it ships code without me, it ships through that gate or it does not ship at all.
The rule that makes an agentic harness trustworthy is simple: propose before you act, and gate every action that reaches production. The agent can be as autonomous as you like, as long as the harness bounds what autonomous is allowed to mean. Remove the gate and you have not built an AI agentic harness. You have automated your own outages.
So an AI agentic harness is not a product you install. It is the discipline around an agent: a trigger, bounded actions, a gate that can refuse, and a record. Build it well and the agent runs your factory while you sleep. Build it badly and it will too, just not the way you wanted.
